Beaconhouse School System Kharian held its first Parliamentary Debates session on 4th November 2021. Two teams, one from the college section and one from the school section, comprising 5 members each participated.
The topic, ‘Change is not progress’, was selected through a simple flip of the coin, it was decided that the college team would be standing for the topic while the school team would be standing against it. Each team was given half an hour, ample time to prepare their points and resource for the upcoming battle. Both teams scavenged every nook and corner of the sources they were given and after 60 minutes of gearing up both teams were set to face off in the institute’s Multi-Purpose Hall.
Three speakers were set to speak their share from each team, turn by turn, in a limited set of time given to each of them to thrash their points to the other side and the audience.
Hopes were high, and both teams delivered, debating with the armory they prepared, with constant call-outs from each team to their opposition; the atmosphere was surely tense, the hall an arena of words and phrases.
After a very heated debate, the Principal arrived on the stage, gave his share of advice of what the teams should improve on during the next round, and after a good long minute of waiting, he announced the results.
By a margin of a very narrow 7 points, the School team had snatched victory from the College team and were set to lead the Parliamentary Debate series, 1-0.
The College team was absolutely stunning, but in the end, it was the finesse of the School team that led them to the first win in the series and a fantastic lead.
